What is Dark Romance?

Everything you need to know about the romance subgenre that's taking BookTok by storm.

Dark Romance Definition

Dark romance is a subgenre of romance fiction that explores the darker side of love. Unlike traditional romance where the hero is caring and protective, dark romance features morally grey or outright villainous love interests.

The "darkness" can come from the hero's actions (stalking, kidnapping, manipulation), the setting (criminal underworld, dystopian societies), or taboo themes that push boundaries.

Despite — or perhaps because of — these elements, dark romance still delivers the emotional catharsis and happy ending (or HEA) that romance readers crave.

Common Dark Romance Elements

🖤 Morally Grey Heroes

The love interest isn't a good person — and doesn't pretend to be. They might be criminals, killers, or manipulators. Their love is possessive and often obsessive.

⚡ Power Imbalance

There's often an unequal power dynamic — captor/captive, boss/employee, predator/prey. The tension from this imbalance drives the story.

🔥 Intense Obsession

Love in dark romance isn't gentle. It's all-consuming, desperate, sometimes destructive. "I'd burn the world for you" energy.

🚫 Taboo Themes

Dark romance explores themes that mainstream romance avoids: dubious consent, age gaps, forbidden relationships, violence, and moral ambiguity.

💕 Eventual HEA

Despite all the darkness, dark romance typically ends with a happy ending (or at least a "happy for now"). The couple ends up together.
